Indirect Taxes
GST (Goods and Services Tax)
GST is a comprehensive tax on the manufacture, sale, and consumption of goods and services across India. It’s levied only at the destination stage, meaning tax is applied only on value addition at each level, from producer to retailer, while suppliers claim credits to eliminate cascading taxes.
GST on Exports:
Exporters can ship goods or services without paying IGST upfront by furnishing a Letter of Undertaking (LUT) or bond, allowing them to claim input-tax credits immediately.
Alternatively, exporters may pay IGST, export under self-seal and self-certification, and then claim a refund of the IGST paid and accumulated input tax credits.
Shipping bills now suffice as export documentation; there’s no need for separate ARE-1/ARE-2 declarations.
Recent updates emphasize exporters must renew LUT annually, meet completion timelines, and ensure export proceeds are realized per FEMA guidelines before filing refunds.
GST portal improvements have simplified refund filings: workflow is invoice-based, with more digital tracking and faster processing, ensuring exports remain a zero-rated supply under Section 16 of the IGST Act
