Labour Laws in India

India has unified 29 legacy labour regulations into four broad codes, the Code on Wages, Industrial Relations Code, Social Security Code, and Occupational Safety Code, with most states finalizing implementation rules by early 2025. These codes simplify compliance for employers while strengthening protections for employees.

Karnataka and other states now allow self-certification under labour laws like the Factories Act and Maternity Benefit Act via the Shram Suvidha portal. Each establishment receives a unique Labour Identification Number (LIN) to streamline reporting.
The Shram Suvidha Portal acts as a unified online system for filing returns, handling inspections, and managing labour grievances, reducing paperwork and improving transparency.
The Social Security Code and subsequent state-level ordinances, such as Karnataka's Gig Workers Welfare Board, are extending social security to gig and platform workers, including welfare funds funded at 1- 5% per transaction.
State initiatives now mandate ergonomic protections like proper seating for factory and shop workers, reflecting a shift toward employee well-being.
